This class is a continuation of our Spanish 3 class, or for anyone who has previously studied the present tense and past tense (el pretérito), including regular and irregular verbs, stem-changing and reflexive verbs, and has a working ability of a variety of vocabulary themes including family & home, everyday activities, numbers & colors, foods, city & travel, the calendar & weather.  Students with a fairly comfortable (although not perfect!) proficiency in these areas will feel most comfortable.  In Spanish 4 we will continue to review and practice the past tense (el pretérito) and we will begin practicing the imperfect tense (el imperfecto).  Students will also be introduced to the future (will) and conditional (would) tenses.

In Spanish 4 we will continue to strengthen and expand students' grammar knowledge and vocabulary base, continuing our emphasis on oral skills and communication based on material learned in Spanish 1-3.  Students will become more accurate using a variety of regular, irregular, stem-changing and reflexive verbs in the present, preterit and imperfect tenses.  Short written assignments to strengthen students’ skills and to provide for personal expression will be assigned, collected by the instructor for corrections and comments, and returned to students for a final re-write.  Readings from our textbook Easy Spanish will also be assigned and discussed.  The texts used in Spanish 1, 2 & 3 will continue to be used in Spanish 4 so there are no new materials that students need to purchase.

By the end of Spanish 4, most students will be able to handle guided conversation in Spanish with increased accuracy and more of an ability to incorporate personal feelings and opinions beyond memorized and familiar expressions.  Students will continue developing strategies for communication by more readily relying on learned elements of the language.  Students will generally be in the Intermediate-Low to Intermediate-Mid level as described by ACTFL (The American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages).

New students considering our Spanish 4 class who are unsure of their proficiency and/or basic skills in Spanish may contact Tom at 651.388.8743 to set up an appointment to have a short proficiency evaluation.  Any student who enrolls for Spanish 4 and finds that it is a bit beyond his/her skills may finish out the session in a Spanish 3 class if available.  Likewise, students who find Spanish 4 well within their ability may advance on to an Intermediate or higher class if available.  Inspired Learning Studio will make every attempt to make your language learning experience successful and rewarding for you.
